Rosas | THE SONG #2

  1. I have never seen a contemporary piece like this. However, after taking a few of the contemporary classes, I can recognize the moves that are associated with this style of dance. I saw the shifting of weight, extensions, "flowy-ness" given by pauses... I was thrown off by the casual wear, the lack of music (even though the woman mocked the sounds with her foot), and story line. The story line might be there, but I didn't really catch it, and that might be because I'm used to SYTYCD's Mia Michels (she's amazing) dramatic work (and I understand perfectly most of it is to keep the audience entertained).
I did enjoy how the sounds of the men's movement was made by the woman and a single foot tapping away. That was by far fetching. I guess I didn't really open to my mind to something so abstract and open, but that's surely something that attracts me to contemporary art and dance.

  2. This was very interesting. I played the dance clip before the interview so I was waiting for the music to play and then it was like "umm.. where is the music?" I have never seen a piece performed without music outside of practice. I find counting to be very difficult so for me the idea of dancing without the music's tempo/beat seems impossible. Their outfits surprised me as well. Dancing with jeans must be very uncomfortable. I didn't really understand the story line of the Song but to me, it seemed like the guy in the white shirt was imitating/copying the guy in the black shirt at one point.

  3. i know that I am one of those people that are fascinated by theatricality but I must say that i find myself falling for this kind of simplicity. This is almost new to me in the sense that the dancer controlled the music rather than the latter. We are in a world where music moves us, a lot of us don't know how to dance without a given rhythm. However, Rosas has proven that even the most subtle movements in the body has its musicality. The wrinkling sounds of our clothes as we walk, the sounds of our feet hitting the pavements/floor, the sounds created in the in the wind as we run, or glide across a space. We are music and when we come to the realization of that, our dances will be original and ours. The first beat or music of our life is our heartbeat and we can start from there and create our dance.

Not quite sure if my point came across correctly, but i love the performance and also the syncopation of the dancers and the girl that was emphasizing on the sounds.

  4. The first thing I noticed when watching was the emotions in his face. I also thought it was interesting how he took off his shoes. The woman off to the side was displaying the rhythm for him to dance. I really was attracted to when they were following in syncopation with the rhythm with one another. One part of the performance I also enjoyed was how they walked off the stage together by the rhythm of her beats. Lastly, I noticed when he went to the floor a couple of times, that some moves we as dancers in the “space” use when experimenting with the floor. Also, the amount of flow displayed in the piece as well. Overall it was a beautiful performance yet unique piece at the same time with no display of music, which was very different for me.
